How to Maintain Ceramic Coating on Your Car (Do's and Don'ts)

1 March 20255 min readBy Mr. Detailer Team

Your ceramic coating is an investment. These 10 rules will keep it performing like new for years — and these 5 mistakes will destroy it in months.

Ceramic coating is not a set-and-forget solution. When properly maintained, it will protect your car's paint for 3 to 5 years and keep it looking showroom-fresh. When neglected or treated incorrectly, the same coating can degrade in under a year. This guide covers everything you need to know to get the maximum life from your coating.

The First 7 Days Are Critical

The ceramic coating application process ends when you drive out of the studio — but the curing process continues for the next 7 days. During this window, the coating is still chemically cross-linking to the paint surface. What you do (or don't do) during this period directly affects the final hardness and durability of the coating.

  • Do NOT wash the car for the first 7 days
  • Do NOT let water sit on the surface (move indoors if rain is expected)
  • Do NOT apply any wax, polish, or spray sealant products
  • Do NOT park under trees where sap or bird droppings can land
  • Do NOT take the car through an automatic car wash
  • DO park in a covered space wherever possible

The Golden Rules of Washing a Ceramic-Coated Car

Always Do This

  • Use a pH-neutral car shampoo (look for labels that say 'ceramic coating safe' or pH 7)
  • Pre-rinse the car with a hose before touching the paint to flush off loose grit
  • Use a clean, high-quality microfibre wash mitt — one pass per panel, flip and use the other side
  • Wash in the shade, never in direct sunlight (soap dries faster and leaves marks)
  • Use the two-bucket method: one bucket for clean soapy water, one for rinsing the mitt
  • Dry immediately with a soft microfibre drying towel — never let water air-dry on the surface
  • Apply a ceramic booster spray (SiO2 spray) every 2–3 months to maintain the hydrophobic effect

Never Do This

  • Never use an automatic car wash with brushes or rollers — they physically strip the coating
  • Never use dish soap, household detergent, or alkaline degreasers on the painted surface
  • Never scrub in circular motions — always wash in straight lines front to back
  • Never use a dry cloth or tissue on the paint — always wet first
  • Never apply wax over a ceramic coating — wax is redundant and can cloud the gloss
  • Never leave bird droppings, tree sap, or tar on the surface for more than 24 hours

Monthly Maintenance Routine

  1. 1Rinse car thoroughly to remove loose dust and brake dust from wheels
  2. 2Apply pH-neutral foam shampoo using a foam cannon or wash bucket
  3. 3Wash panels with a clean microfibre mitt using straight-line motions
  4. 4Rinse and immediately dry with a waffle-weave microfibre drying towel
  5. 5Use a quick detail spray on glass, trim, and bodywork for added gloss and protection
  6. 6Inspect for any water spots, bird etching, or paint damage and address immediately

Annual Top-Up and Inspection

Once a year, bring your car back to Mr. Detailer for an annual maintenance coating. This involves a thorough decontamination wash, inspection of the coating's hydrophobic performance, and application of a ceramic coating booster layer. This single annual visit can extend the coating's life by 1 to 2 additional years and maintains the warranty on our work.

Safe Products to Use

  • CarPro Reset — ceramic-safe maintenance shampoo
  • Gyeon Q2M Bathe — pH-neutral wash
  • Koch Chemie GSF — gentle surface cleaner
  • Any SiO2-infused spray detailer as a booster between washes
  • Meguiar's Gold Class shampoo — widely available and ceramic-safe

Products to Avoid

  • Any alkaline degreaser or traffic film remover (TFR) on painted panels
  • Household dish soap (destroys hydrophobic layer rapidly)
  • Traditional carnauba wax (sits on top of coating, clouds appearance over time)
  • Silicone-based spray polishes
  • Abrasive compound or cutting compound on coated surfaces
