Should You Get Ceramic Coating on a Brand New Car? (Yes — Here's Why)

25 March 20255 min readBy Mr. Detailer Team

Your brand new car's paint isn't as perfect as you think. Here's why coating a new car within the first 90 days is the smartest single investment you can make for its long-term value.

You've just driven your brand-new car out of the showroom. The paint looks flawless. You're wondering if ceramic coating is even necessary — surely the factory paint is already protected? The honest answer is: your new car's paint is already compromised before you've driven it 100 km, and the sooner you coat it, the better. Here's the full picture.

What Happens to New Car Paint Before It Reaches You

From the factory to your hands, a new car goes through transport (often on open carriers exposed to road grime, bird droppings, and industrial fallout), storage at a yard or port where it may sit for weeks, and finally a Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) at the dealership — which typically involves a wash using non-professional equipment. That dealership wash alone introduces swirl marks into the clear coat. The protective plastic film on bonnets and bumpers, when removed, often leaves adhesive residue.

  • Transport scratches from open-carrier delivery — especially on bonnets and roofs
  • Industrial fallout (iron particles) embedded in the paint during port storage
  • Dealer PDI wash swirl marks from incorrect washing technique
  • Adhesive residue from protective transit film
  • Spray wax or silicon-based dressing applied by the dealer without proper prep

Does a New Car Need Paint Correction Before Coating?

Usually a single-stage light polish is enough for a new car — we're correcting minor PDI swirls and dealer wash marks rather than years of accumulated damage. This takes 2–3 hours and leaves the paint in genuinely perfect condition. We then apply ceramic coating over that corrected surface, locking it in permanently. We strongly advise against coating without any correction, as even minor dealer swirls sealed under the coating become permanent.

How Soon After Buying Should You Book?

Ideally within 30 to 90 days. Before 30 days, the factory clear coat is still fully outgassing (releasing solvents as it fully cures) — coating too soon can interfere with this process. After 90 days in Pune's environment, your paint has already accumulated UV damage, embedded road grime, and potentially bird dropping etching. The sweet spot is 1 to 3 months after delivery.

What NOT to Do Before Coating a New Car

  • Do NOT let the dealership apply their 'Teflon coating' or 'anti-rust treatment' — these are low-grade products that make proper ceramic coating harder to apply later
  • Do NOT take the car to an automatic car wash in the first 3 months
  • Do NOT apply any wax or spray sealant — these need to be removed before ceramic coating and create extra prep work
  • Do NOT wait more than 6 months — the longer you wait, the more prep correction the car will need
