Water spots are the most common complaint from ceramic coating owners. Here's what causes them, how to remove them without damaging the coating, and how to prevent them in Pune's hard-water conditions.
Water spots are the most common issue ceramic coating owners bring to us at Mr. Detailer — and in Pune, the problem is worse than most Indian cities because of the high mineral content in tap water. Understanding what type of water spot you're dealing with determines whether you can fix it at home or need professional help.
When water evaporates from your car's surface, it leaves behind whatever minerals were dissolved in it. Pune's tap water (from MSEDCL supply) has relatively high calcium and magnesium content — these minerals dry as white, hazy deposits on the paint surface. On a ceramic-coated car, the hydrophobic surface causes water to bead, which concentrates the mineral deposit as the bead evaporates — creating a more pronounced spot than on uncoated paint.
These sit on top of the ceramic coating — the minerals have not bonded into or through the coating. They appear as white, hazy circles and are typically removable at home. They form from rain, car washes, and sprinkler water that is allowed to air-dry on the surface.
These occur when water spots are left in direct sunlight for extended periods — the heat bakes the mineral deposit into the coating's surface, creating a chemical bond. These appear as faint, permanent-looking marks and require light machine polishing to remove. In very severe cases, they can etch through the ceramic coating into the clear coat.
Etched water spots that have bonded into the ceramic coating require light machine polishing with a finishing pad and a fine polishing compound. This removes the top layer of the ceramic coating (and the deposit with it) but does not damage the paint beneath. After correction, the affected panel needs to be re-coated with a ceramic layer — either a full professional re-coat or a ceramic spray topper. This process is best handled by a professional to avoid uneven correction.
Pune's municipal water supply has an average hardness of 200–350 mg/L (as CaCO3) — significantly harder than many other Indian cities. This means washing your car with tap water, even on a coated surface, and allowing it to air-dry will consistently create mineral deposits. The solution is always to rinse with a final pass of filtered or RO water, and to dry immediately after washing. Never let tap water evaporate on a ceramic-coated surface.
